Kalgoorlie
So last weekend we had a long drive to Kal. About seven hours to get there, and six to get back (less stops). Despite the long journey, and only having one real day there, it was still worth it.
We stayed at the Broadwater Hotel, with it's 5star restaurant, which was our cheif eating spot. With temperatures in the low 40's (c) we didn't walk about too much, but had a great 1/2 day tour bus ride, followed by an afternoon in the car, visiting museums and the like.
The big BIG BIG thing to see in Kal is the super-pit - being the worlds largest open-cast gold mine, it's probably the thing that made the whole trip worth it. They have constructed a simple visiters lookout, leetering on the edge of the mine, so the view is very impressive.
I can think of a lot of places I'd rather go than Kal, but as a one-off destination, it was definately worth it.
